Before the cut.

The early visual intentions behind this world. The finished film may take the story somewhere different.

Frontal 32mm deep-focus compositions, walnut drawers and a coral uniform in a tired fluorescent shopping hall. Possible lives are practical miniatures, scratched and folded from handling. The clerk finds lovely moments in the returned childhood and keeps presenting them as proof that he should be satisfied. He is not seeking a refund; he wants her to see the parts she never entered. She stamps the box incomplete, walks out from behind the desk, and joins him inside the smallest room. Outside, the queue waits. For once she does not apologise.

The first premise

A department-store clerk processes returns of unlived lives: marriages, adventures, entire houses. When her son brings back the childhood she gave him, store policy demands she inspect it.
